Building Community Through Movement
Creating Space to Move, Connect & Grow
There’s something special about stepping onto the mat with no expectations other than to move, learn, and connect.
That was the heart behind our Open Mat Sessions — creating an inclusive space where athletes of different experience levels could come together, build confidence, and enjoy being active.
From the first session to our final gathering, Open Mat became more than just time on the mat. It became an opportunity to build community, encourage one another, and create positive experiences through sport.
How It Started
The idea behind Open Mat was simple: to create a welcoming space where everyone could participate.
Rather than focusing solely on competition or performance, the sessions encouraged participants to learn at their own pace, try something new, and connect with others.
Each session offered a chance to practice skills, challenge yourself, and have fun — regardless of where you were starting from.

More Than Just Practice
While the mat was at the centre of every session, the experience extended far beyond practice.
Participants had the opportunity to:
Build new skills and confidence
Meet and connect with other athletes
Learn from coaches and experienced participants
Challenge themselves in a supportive environment
Stay active while having fun
Become part of a growing community
The goal was never perfection. It was about showing up, trying things, and encouraging the people around you.
Growing Together
As the sessions continued, so did the sense of community.
New faces joined, familiar faces returned, and participants became more comfortable stepping onto the mat and trying something new.
Every session brought something different — new challenges, new connections, and plenty of moments worth remembering.
The Energy of Open Mat
One of the best parts of Open Mat was the energy participants brought.
There were moments of focus and concentration, moments of challenge, and plenty of laughter in between.
Whether someone was trying a skill for the first time or building on something they had already learned, everyone contributed to the atmosphere.
That shared energy is what made each session feel different from simply showing up for practice.
Community in Action
Open Mat was also about creating connections beyond individual sessions.
Participants encouraged one another, celebrated progress, and created an environment where people could feel comfortable learning together.
We’re proud of the connections made, the skills developed, the confidence built, and the memories created throughout the sessions.
Thank you to every participant, coach, volunteer, and community member who helped make Open Mat possible.
Thank You
To everyone who showed up, participated, encouraged someone else, volunteered their time, or helped create a welcoming environment:
Thank you for being part of Open Mat.
We’ll see you on the mat again soon.
