The Message Girls Grow Up Hearing

A lot of girls grow up hearing the same message:

Be smaller.
Be lighter.
Take up less space.

But wrestling challenges that idea in a powerful way.

On the mat, it’s not about shrinking yourself.
It’s about building strength — physically and mentally.

Strength matters.
Effort matters.
Confidence matters.

And slowly, your mindset begins to shift.

Learning to Appreciate What Your Body Can Do

Instead of focusing on how your body looks, you start paying attention to what it can do.

You notice:

  • How much stronger you’re getting

  • How is your balance improving

  • How can you push through tough moments

That shift changes everything.

Because when you stop viewing your body as something to fix, and start seeing it as something to develop, your confidence grows.

Confidence Beyond the Mat

We’ve seen girls stop comparing themselves to others and start focusing on their own progress.

We’ve seen them:

  • stand taller

  • speak more confidently

  • take pride in their strength

And it doesn’t just stay in the gym.

That confidence carries into school, friendships, and everyday life.

As Coach Braxton puts it, wrestling teaches more than just physical skills:

“From a young age, the sport taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of hard work.”

That kind of growth stays with you long after practice ends. The lessons learned on the mat often shape how girls handle challenges in everyday life, too.

Strong Means More Than Physical Strength

Strong becomes more than physical.

It becomes:

  • How do you think about yourself

  • How you handle challenges

  • How you show up when things get hard

And once you feel that kind of strength, it’s hard to go back to the old mindset.

Because you realize:

You were never meant to make yourself smaller.
You were meant to grow.

Reflection Question

What’s one thing that makes you feel strong?
