Girls Who Grapple: “I Didn’t Think Wrestling Was for Me”
Wrestling Can Feel Intimidating at First
For a lot of girls, wrestling isn’t the obvious choice.
It’s not always the sport your friends are signing up for. It’s not what you see all over social media. And if you’ve never tried it before, it can feel… intimidating.
Walking into your first practice can be one of the hardest parts.
You might feel like everyone already knows what they’re doing. Like you’re behind. Like you don’t belong there yet.
But here’s something important that doesn’t get said enough:
Every single wrestler you see started as a beginner.
They didn’t walk in confidently.
They didn’t already know the moves.
They weren’t sure of themselves either.
They just showed up.
And that’s where everything begins.
“Growing up in wrestling shaped who I am both on and off the mat, and without the sport I would not be the person I am today. ”
- Coach Braxton
What Wrestling Becomes Over Time
As Coach Braxton shares:
“Coaching has quickly become my favourite part of wrestling because it gives me the opportunity to give back by mentoring athletes, building confidence in young people, and helping them grow through challenges both in sport and life. Any small piece of knowledge or experience I can share with young athletes, I am happy to do so!”
Growth Happens Through Showing Up
Wrestling has a way of changing how you see yourself. Not overnight — but slowly, through effort and consistency.
At first, it might just be getting through the warm-up.
Then it’s learning your first move.
Then it’s realizing you’re stronger than you thought.
Over time, something shifts.
You stop worrying so much about looking perfect.
You start focusing on getting better.
You begin to trust yourself more.
Confidence Looks Different for Everyone
We’ve seen girls walk into the room quietly, unsure, and hesitant to even step onto the mat.
Weeks later, those same girls are:
speaking up
trying new things without fear
encouraging others
Not because it suddenly became easy —
but because they gave themselves a chance to grow.
You Don’t Need to Be Ready to Start
Wrestling isn’t about being the best right away.
It’s about being willing to start.
So if you’ve ever thought:
“I’m not strong enough.”
“I’ll probably be bad at it.”
“What if I embarrass myself?”
Just know — those thoughts are normal.
They’re not signs that you shouldn’t try.
There are signs that you’re stepping outside your comfort zone.
And that’s exactly where growth happens.
You don’t need to feel ready. You just need to show up.
