Raising the Bar: SATEC Wrestling at Regionals

Satec Athletes at the Regional Championships

The after-school wrestling program at SATEC @ W.A. Porter Collegiate Institute continues to set a new standard — and this year’s Regional Championships proved it.

Led by captains Mac Ellis and Aishshani Rameshkumar, our team of 21 athletes delivered an exceptional performance that showcased just how far this program has come.

To qualify for the City Championships, wrestlers must place in the top four of their weight class. This year, 16 out of 21 athletes earned top-four finishes.

Last year, we qualified six.

This year, we more than doubled that number.

The growth speaks for itself.

Battling Through Every Position

Regionals was filled with neck-and-neck matches that tested both skill and mindset. Every round demanded composure, endurance, and heart.

Our athletes fought through difficult positions.
They pushed through fatigue.
They adjusted mid-match.
They stayed resilient from the first whistle to their final bout.

What stood out most wasn’t just the wins — it was the way every wrestler stepped onto the mat prepared to give everything they had.

And they did.

A Gold Medal Journey

One of the most inspiring stories of the tournament came from Abdur Rahman.

Last year, Abdur placed sixth at Regionals, ending his season there. This year, he returned different — more confident, more disciplined, and more coachable. He trusted his training. He fought through every position.

The result?

Gold Medal in the 54kg weight class at Regionals.

That kind of transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through consistency, reflection, and belief. Coaches Braxton and Dillon are incredibly proud of the journey he’s taken.

Team Success

Beyond individual performances, the team achieved something special:

  • 🏆 Men’s Team Title

  • 🥈 Second Overall Team — just 2 points shy of first place

Two points.

That razor-thin margin speaks to how competitive the tournament was and how close this team is to the very top.

The coaches could not be prouder of this group.

Eyes on Cities

Now, 16 SATEC athletes are headed to the City Championships on February 24th at York University. From there, the next goal is clear: secure a spot at OFSAA in March.

But regardless of what happens next, this season has already proven something powerful.

When athletes commit.
When leaders step up.
When a team believes in the process.

Results follow.

And at SATEC, the bar has officially been raised.
