Being There Starts Here: Why Mental Health Support Matters

You Don’t Need to Be a Therapist to Be There for Your Friends

If your friend was going through something right now…
Would you actually know what to do?

A lot of us care a lot about our friends—but when things get serious, it can feel awkward, confusing, or even scary to step in.

That’s exactly why the Be There Certificate was created by Jack.org and the Born This Way Foundation.

It’s a free, 2-hour course that teaches you how actually to show up for someone who might be struggling.

What to Look For

Sometimes it’s not obvious.

But if someone:

  • They aren’t acting like themselves

  • Pulls away from the group

  • Seems overwhelmed, angry, or really down

…and it’s been going on for a while—it might be more than “just a bad day.”

What You’ll Learn (Without It Being Complicated)

The course breaks it down into 5 simple things:

1. Show you care
Just say something.
“Hey, I’ve noticed you haven’t been yourself lately.”

2. Hear them out
Let them talk. Don’t cut them off. Don’t try to fix everything.

3. Know your role
You’re not their therapist—you’re their friend.

4. Connect to help
If they need more support, help them find it. You don’t have to do it alone.

5. Respect your limits
You matter too. It’s okay to set boundaries.

Why This Matters for Our Community

At Beat the Streets, we’re more than just a program—we’re a team.

And being a team means having each other’s backs on and off the mat.

“I’m excited to embed these principles into our programming, helping create spaces that are more supportive, responsive, and grounded in mental health awareness.” — Coach Leah

This is how we build that kind of environment.

Be Part of Something Bigger

This is part of a global movement called Generation Be There—helping people our age learn how to support each other in real life.

Because checking in on your friends shouldn’t feel confusing.
